Met Gala 2018: Fabulous Footwear from Fashion’s Biggest Night
Like all of you, we at Cobbler Concierge were thrilled to watch the fashions that were worn on the red carpet at the 2018 Met Gala in New York City. It was exciting to see the styles chosen to go along with this year’s theme, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” Stars, models, entertainers, and other invited guests emerged in glamorous, and, in some cases, risky ensembles as they paid homage to the theme.
Many noticed the spectacular gowns and formal wear without looking any further. But, at Cobbler Concierge, we know that the footwear and accessories selected can make or break the whole ‘package’. Our eyes gazed down to see the footwear choices and we were not disappointed!
In some cases, shoes actually completed the full outfit. Katy Perry’s gold, over-the-knee boots, competed the Versace ensemble that included a gold minidress and custom-made wings. Mary J. Blige looked remarkable in form-fitting light blue and gold Versace gown with custom-made, matching thigh-high boots. From the high slit in the gown, the boots were able to share top billing with her gown and truly be noticed on the runway.
Some of the guests chose shoes (or boots) to make a statement or complement the overall vision. Solange Knowles’ open toed, clear heeled, black Brother Vellies footwear made a statement, as did the RL chunky heeled black leather boots Shailene Woodley chose to complete her look. Rihanna’s Bishop hat (Stephen Jones Millinery) and gown (Margiela), perhaps the most talked about look of the evening, was completed beautifully by a stunning pair of jeweled stilettos designed by Christian Louboutin. Blake Lively, who stunned in red and gold from Versace, did not disappoint footwear aficionados. Louboutin's red and gold stiletto, designed for Lively for the evening were simply spectacular. Louboutin’s solid stiletto pump perfectly complemented Amal Clooney’s lavish rose-themed, Joan of Arc channeling train and blue cigarette pant. On her husband’s arm, the evening’s co-host was a vision in her Richard Quinn choice.
Perhaps the most popular trend for the evening was strappy gold stilettos. An array of variations to the look were worn by several guests including Sienna Miller Jasmine Sanders, Kim Kardashian, Irina Shayk and several others. Many of the guests were seen in styles by Jimmy Choo, as well as Diane Von Furstenberg. We think the gold, open-style stilettos, we believe, were such a popular choice because they complemented the metallic trim on so many of the designs and worked with the overall theme of the night. They also welcomed the warmer weather that east coast’ers have been craving after an exceedingly long winter. The Gala was only days ago, but designers [at nearly every price point] are putting their best foot forward with variations of the look emerging in boutiques and department stores all over town. We expect to see ladies in gold, strappy sandals and heels all throughout the city this summer!
The men were not to be outdone this year as was evidenced by Chadwick Boseman’s gold embellished dress shoe, a look that simply commanded attention. Black loafers or slippers were the choice for Christian Combs and Nick Jonas, both in Dolce & Gabbana, as well as the trio from Migos, who, like Jared Leto, all arrived in Gucci’s latest. Lewis Hamilton wore a high-top boot that was a veritable hat tip to the most popular sneaker styles of the season. Jaden Smith’s sneaker also served as proof positive that the style can be a fashion statement at the most formal of events.
We were excited to see several of these styles head to the Met Gala after parties, looking fabulous until the wee hours of the morning. White ankle boots, open-toed, metallic stilettos, over-the-knee boots to match the outfit, black platform shoes, rockin’ high top sneakers…we saw them all. They were the styles we’ve reported about for both men and women for spring and they looked fabulous!
Some reporting has talked about some of the Met Gala fashions as being ‘over the top’ or ‘too outrageous’. We think they’ve missed the point. The Met Gala is called fashion’s biggest night. Designer upon designer has an opportunity to show their creative genius. From gowns to tuxedos, accessories to footwear, we have an opportunity to see splendor on display. If the designs were anything less than over the top or outrageous, we would be utterly disappointed. It is the window into their creativity – both the designers and the attendees who wear their visions – that keeps us coming back for more. With rumors of Anna Wintour retiring swirling around, we at Cobbler Concierge hope she will stay and that her Met Gala legacy continues on for years to come.
