Repair of the Week: Dog Ate Your Shoes?
Find out how this dog-lover salvaged her mother’s chic Ferragamo heels after a pet got the better of them. Maggie Wen said she’d read about Cobbler Concierge online, which got her thinking about a pair of shoes in the back of her closet.
The patent red sling-backs, a gift from her stepfather to her mother, had only been worn a few times before Maggie’s puppy got her paws on them.
“[When it happened] my mom was obviously very sad, and I still remember her telling me to take the ‘remains’ of her shoes out to the trash because she couldn't bear to look at it. Unbeknownst to her, I had actually kept and held on to them all this time.” Fast-forward five years, and Maggie said she knew she had a decision to make: get the shoes repaired or let them go.
Uncertain who to turn to with such a complicated fix, Maggie started googling to see what she could find. She soon landed on a journalist’s review of Cobbler Concierge, and liked that she could get a quick diagnosis via text message before sending in the designer heels.
“My initial text was along the lines of: ‘My dog completely destroyed these shoes. I just need to know if it's even realistic or possible to fix.’ She recalled. “I got a quick [response], saying that [the shoes] were repairable, but it would take a bit longer than the usual processing time to source the leather material from overseas.”
After that, Maggie said she felt reassured by regular email updates, and being involved in choosing the right color leather for the job. Four weeks later she received the shoes.
“When I showed my mom, she initially didn't quite recognize them and thought they were new shoes!” she said. “Then, she was very surprised that I had kept them all these years and beyond shocked how Cobbler Concierge was able to repair the un-repairable.” From toe to heel, the slick Ferragamo sandals required a detailed reconstruction, but the finished pair is #LikeNew condition.
